Yukon: Small Town Vibe with Big Perks
Yukon is perfect for families wanting a quiet suburban feel without being too far from the city. It’s got that small-town charm, great schools, and an affordable housing market.
✔️ Pros:
-
Family-friendly vibe (think PTA energy, minus the drama)
-
Strong public schools
-
Affordable homes (Median price: ~$270,000)
-
~20-minute drive to downtown OKC
⚠️ Cons:
-
Commute into the city can be a daily factor
-
A little too quiet for some — may not be ideal for young singles or night owls
Moore: Affordable & Convenient
Moore brings together low home prices and plenty of things to do. It’s just south of OKC and close to Norman, making it a great middle ground.
✔️ Pros:
-
Excellent public schools
-
Super affordable homes (Median price: ~$240,000)
-
Lots of shopping, dining, and the famous retro Warren Theater
-
Easy access to both OKC and Norman
⚠️ Cons:
-
Reputation for tornado activity (due to two historic storms)
-
More traffic compared to smaller suburbs
-
Slightly tougher commute
The Village: Charm Meets Central Location
Full disclosure: this is where I live — and I love it. The Village is a small, centrally located suburb that feels like one big neighborhood.
✔️ Pros:
-
Great location near Nichols Hills and Lake Hefner
-
Tons of mid-century charm
-
Affordable homes (Median price: ~$225,000)
-
Walkable, dog-friendly, and full of neighborly vibes
⚠️ Cons:
-
Smaller homes (many under 1,500 sq. ft.)
-
Not ideal if you need lots of square footage
Norman: College Town Energy
Home to the University of Oklahoma, Norman has a young, vibrant energy and is a solid choice for families and fans of that college town atmosphere.
✔️ Pros:
-
Great schools and strong community
-
Tons of events: sports, concerts, festivals
-
Wide variety of homes and neighborhoods
-
Affordable median home price (~$275,000)
⚠️ Cons:
-
Game day traffic — it’s real
-
~30-35 minute commute to downtown OKC
Mustang: Quiet and Growing
Mustang is like Yukon’s smaller sibling — equally family-friendly, even more affordable, and a bit more low-key.
✔️ Pros:
-
Small-town atmosphere, perfect for families
-
Great public schools
-
Affordable homes (Median price: ~$265,000)
⚠️ Cons:
-
Limited entertainment options
-
25–30 minute drive to downtown OKC
Small Town Suburbs: Even More Peace and Quiet
Looking for true small-town living? There are several micro-suburbs around OKC like Piedmont, Noble, Blanchard, and Tuttle that offer a slower pace.
✔️ Pros:
-
Lower home prices
-
Wide open spaces
-
Country-style living with fewer crowds
⚠️ Cons:
-
Fewer amenities
-
Longer drives for shopping, entertainment, or commuting
Edmond: The Golden Child
If Oklahoma City suburbs were in high school, Edmond would be voted “Most Popular.” It’s polished, packed with amenities, and ideal for families aiming for top-tier schools.
✔️ Pros:
-
Some of the best schools in the state
-
Beautiful, master-planned neighborhoods
-
Tons of parks, restaurants, and shops
-
Clean, organized, and family-friendly
⚠️ Cons:
-
Higher home prices (Median price: ~$350,000+)
-
Traffic is no joke — bring patience (or yoga)
